About Mount Isa Airport

Mount Isa Airport is the gateway to North West Queensland, supporting one of the most mineral-rich regions in the world. Just 8 kilometres from the city centre, the airport provides vital links for the community and underpins the operations of the mining industry.

The airport welcomes thousands of passengers each month, with the majority travelling for business or FIFO purposes. Visiting friends and relatives and leisure travel also play an important role in supporting Mount Isa’s local economy.

Owned and operated by Queensland Airports Limited since 2005, Mount Isa Airport is proud to serve as an essential connector for the North West.

Our Story

Aviation in Mount Isa began in the 1920s with the construction of the town’s first aerodrome south of the city. As mining expanded, the airport moved to its current location in 1950 to support growth in the region.

Over the decades, Mount Isa Airport has grown with the community. A new terminal was built in 1969, expanded in the 1980s, and extensively refurbished in 2000. Further upgrades followed in 2010, including a $13 million runway overlay and terminal improvements to meet the needs of modern travellers.

Since becoming part of Queensland Airports Limited, Mount Isa Airport has focused on partnerships with airlines, industry and the community to strengthen regional connectivity and deliver enduring benefits for North West Queensland.
